Joy at the Black Star Rising program

“Joy in the Journey”: Black Star Rising Student Profile

Joy is a rising 9th grader, joining Lincoln High School. She shared her journey with Spark in an interview. Her interest in Black Star Rising (BSR) was sparked by her older brother's positive experience with the program prior to his freshman year. "My brother did BSR before he was a freshman," Joy explained. "He said it was fun and really helped him with his classes."

Reflecting on her academic progress, Joy shared how BSR helped her catch up in math and science. "I fell behind a bit in math in 7th grade but now thanks to Black Star Rising I have a better understanding," she explained. The experience has also brought social skills, maturity, and ideas about her future after high school.

Coming from AP Giannini Middle School, Joy is looking forward to the new adventure at Lincoln High School, especially since she already knew many fellow students heading there. Joy's enthusiasm for BSR wasn't just about academics; she also cherished the social aspects of the program. "I enjoy meeting new people… and the snacks," she laughed. She also appreciated how BSR created community through project-based team activities in STEM, which suited Joy's naturally social personality. "They put us in different groups and we do activities together. It's a very strong social bonding experience.”

When asked about her aspirations, Joy expressed a keen interest in the medical field, particularly radiology. "I want to study radiology or anything in that field. I like the idea of helping people and working in a hospital," she said. She is also considering a career in law, which was piqued due to her mother's background as a lawyer. Last week, along with her BSR classmates, Joy graduated from the summer program, attending a graduation ceremony with Superintendent Wayne and other members of the community. We wish her all the best of luck in High School and beyond!
